  • Notes
    • (Research):There are some different opinions about the name of Gabriel Sam.

A: The death certificat shows the name Gabriel Sam with a birthdate as about 1927 (86 years old at his death in 1913). The Census of 1870 and 1880 shows him as Gabriel Sam, both with the more or less same children. Later censuses also shows him as Gabriel Sam. We can't find no birth certificate for him.

B: Some pointed us to two entries in Father Heberts Books Volume 33 of Southwest Louisiana Records.
      1) Page 110:
"ALEXANDER, Gabriel m. 1866 Onesime ROMARD (GC Ch.: v,35, p,2)"

      2) Page 112:
"ALEXANDRE, Gabriel freed from Mrs. Ned ROW m. 13 Jan 1866 Onezia ROMARD, freed from Marcellite Guilbeau This is an example of slaves taking a different surname from their former masters. (GC Ch.: v.4, p.43)"

If this would be true, then Gabriel's last name should have been orginial ROW and not SAM, and his new name would have been Alexandre. And why would he had changed then his name from ALEXANDRE (in 1866) to SAM in 1870 (showing in the census)?
